For years, my life has been shaped by two great loves: art and animals. From the days I spent painting colorful canvases to the countless hours I spent rescuing and caring for dogs, these passions have always been intertwined. But I never imagined that one day, they would come together in such a meaningful way through the stories in my new book, Promises Kept. The inspiration came from the experiences behind it.
From Canvas to Page: How It All Began
For as long as I can remember, painting has been my way of expressing the beauty I see in the world. Especially in the eyes of the dogs I’ve rescued. Each dog, with their unique personality and story, became more than just a subject to paint; they became my muse. While I was painting them, I would often think about their journeys. For example, where they came from, the struggles they had endured, and the love they brought into my life. This painting inspiration is a key part behind the story of Promises Kept.
It wasn’t long before I realized that their stories deserved more than just a place on my canvases. I began writing down their tales, not just to remember them but to share with others the joy, resilience, and hope these dogs embodied. I made a little booklet up with the paintings and stories to send to an investor. It was then I was told that my stories need to be published. And that’s how Promises Kept was born. This was the journey behind Promises Kept.
The Heart of Promises Kept
Promises Kept is a collection of heartfelt stories about some of the incredible dogs I’ve had the privilege to rescue and know. Each chapter tells the story of a different dog, accompanied by one of my original paintings that captures their essence. From the scruffy stray who found love in a new home to the once-abandoned puppy who grew into a confident companion, these dogs have forever changed my life. And now, I hope their stories will touch your heart too. The book dives into the story behind the scenes of Promises Kept.
In 1991, the day Michael Landon died, I found Little Joe, which is how he got his name. The police picked him up at a halfway house after someone dumped him in oil and left him to die. This personal anecdote also reveals a piece from behind the story of Promises Kept.
Art Meets Storytelling
The process of blending my paintings with my writing felt like the most natural thing in the world. When I paint a dog, I aim to capture not just their appearance but their essence and personality. This includes their spirit, energy, and the journey they’ve experienced. When I write, I strive to tell their complete story—hardships, triumphs, and everything in between. This combination brings to life the heart behind Promises Kept.
I believe that art and storytelling go hand in hand. One brings emotion to life through visuals, while the other gives it a voice. By combining these two passions of mine, I hope to create something in the stories of Promises Kept that will resonate with dog lovers, art enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the beauty of second chances. Behind every tale in Promises Kept lies a deeper story.
